Dr. Du Bois, dying at 95, missed the 1963 March on Washington due to lost U.S. citizenship after joining the Communist Party. Denied a visa, he gained Ghanaian citizenship, receiving a state burial in 1963. Initially interred at Osu Christianborg Castle, his remains were later moved to this site. His wife, Shirley Graham Du Bois, experienced exile, ultimately resting alongside him.
