The church built on top of the male slave dungeon allowed British slaveholders to worship while also keeping an eye on what was happening below. While there may not be definitive theories explaining why the church was constructed in this location, it’s possible that it served as a means of exerting spiritual control over the enslaved African men, further breaking their spirits.
