In 1957, Ghana gained freedom from British rule. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared independence after a riot in 1948 when promised rewards for soldiers were not given. He pushed for freedom, and in 1961, a monument symbolizing self-governance was commissioned. Nkrumah aimed for a United States of Africa but was overthrown in 1966. His legacy lives on, reminding us of the struggle for justice and freedom.
