This area is the male slave courtyard, where male slaves were held. There were about nine rooms for men and 600 male slaves at any given time. Originally used for trade goods, they were converted into dungeons. The castle also had a Roman Catholic church, the first in West Africa, and later a Dutch Reform Church. The iron bars were added by the English for soldier training and structural reinforcement.
