The church of Saints Cosmas and Damian was built inside the ruins of the Temple of Peace by the Ostrogoth king of Italy Theodorik in 526 AD. This early stage of the Middle Ages had a lot of elements of continuity with the last centuries of the Roman empire. The mosaics in the apse are a masterpiece of the early Christian art.
