The British slave holders in Cape Coast Castle used powerful cannons and cannonballs to protect their gold resources from French and Dutch attacks. The cannons could fire the cannonballs up to 1km away, and the gunpowder inside them caused immense damage upon impact, making them a powerful deterrent.
